Salvage Title
How do you know if your title is a salvage title in New Jersey?
Just curious as to what identifies a title as salvage for a car in new jersey. Is there a code or some wording inputted? Where should I look? Thanks.
Actually, in NJ it only says "salvage title" until it is fixed to state specifications. Unless it has changed recently, once it is fixed, NJ issues a clean title. There is no coding that I am aware of. You can tell how many owners the vehicle has had by the digit BEFORE the VIN starts. A is first owner, B is second, etc. Your best bet is to do a carfax check to see if any serious claims have been paid out on the vehicle. There is a charge but this is the only way you will find out for sure if the car has ever had bad damage.

Salvaged And Seized Cars: To Buy Or Not To Buy?
When you are buying a car, it is no surprise you want to find a great deal. You can find a deal with salvaged or seized cars, but there are things you need to keep in mind when considering this option.
When you are looking at a salvaged or seized car, the first thing you must realize is it depends on a car. Some salvaged vehicles were seized because of criminal activity. When that is the case, the car might be in perfectly good condition. You might find a great deal on this kind of car, and you could end up with something that will last for a long time.
You also might find a car that only needs some minor repairs and it is up and running. If you can find a vehicle that does not require numerous expensive repairs, it can be a great deal. Since you are getting a deal on the vehicle, it is still worthwhile if you have to put a small amount of money into fixing it.
In other cases, a salvaged car can cost more to fix than it is actually worth. When that is the case, it may not be a good buy for you. Some cars can be on their way to falling apart and you will not be able to get what you need out of the vehicle.
There have been people who have purchased salvaged vehicles only to realize they were in over their heads. They did not realize it was going to take that long to work on the vehicles, and they did not have the money to invest in the project.
Also, salvaged cars do not have a good resale value. Even if you fix the car up, it will still be considered to be a salvaged car. That will hurt it when you re trying to sell it. A salvaged car comes with a salvage title, and there is not anything that can be done about that. Because of that, you will have to find someone to purchase it that will look past the fact that it is a salvaged vehicle.
When you are deciding if you should get a salvaged or seized car, you need to put a lot of thought into the issue. You need to look at the car at hand, and also decide what your expectations are. If you are looking for a car you can work on, a salvaged car is a great buy. If you need a car that will be dependable, you may want to look elsewhere.
As always, keep your options open but know what you can get yourself into with such a car. You might find the best car you have ever had, or you might get a car that will fall apart within the week. When it comes to such a car, you really do not know. It is a game of chance. If you find a great deal, you can purchase it, but be mindful that it might end up breaking down immediately.
