How much would a brand new air conditioning system in a 1979 Mercedes cost?
I drive a 1979 Mercedes Turbo Diesel 300SD. The windows don't roll don't so I'm considering getting a new AC system or paying someone to fix the motors on the windows so they can roll don't.
I've had multiple problems with each of them. Besides that, the car runs excellent.

You should fix both, windows first. You need to be able to roll down your windows for numerous reasons. Here are my inputs:
1. Windows: Check the switches first. The switch contact points become corroded over time and may not be making a proper electrical contact (I've opened and cleaned numerous over the course of 15 years of owning Mercedes Benzes). This is the cheapest thing to try first (and may very well fix the problem). Worse comes to worse, you need new motors which would run around $65/each.
2. Air Conditioning: The old vacuum servo climate controls in these cars frankly weren't the best design (I wrestled and eventually completely rebuilt the same one you have in my 1979 300D). For argument sake, here are some things you can do:
a. Buy a R134a retrofit kit for your car (if you haven't already) since they don't make R12 for the older systems. Try charging the system (I'm guessing you turn the compressor on and it does not blow cold?)
b. Assuming NOTHING happens when you hit the AC switch, check the switch itself (see item #1)
c. If the switch is OK and the recharge doesn't help, here are prices (not including labor) of the key components:
i. AC drier: $25
ii. AC orifice tube $35
iii. AC evaporator core $175
iv. AC compressor $125-$400 (depending upon if you get a rebuilt w/ core deposit or brand new)
Without more details of the symptoms, it's hard to say. But if you hit the AC button, hear/feel the compressor engage and still no cold air, I'll bet money your AC system needs a recharge. If not, check into the other components. I'd also fix your windows too no matter what =)

Silicone is being used for various applications all across the world in a large array of industries. But it is most common usage is as a sealant for water proofing. You will need a caulking gun, a razor knife, paint thinner and a rag. Start by inserting the silicone sealant into the caulking gun. A caulking gun is usually a round cylinder made of metal that will hold the sealant. The metal rod inside the gun controls the movements of the silicone inside the gun. The handle on one end of the gun ensures you push out exactly the amount of silicone you need.
Next cut off a small piece located at the tip of the sealant tube. When starting you need to start off small and then cut off bigger pieces as you go on further depending on how big the holes are. Next place the tip at the area that needs to be sealed and press the handle of the caulking gun. Make sure you dispense only as much as you require.
Once you are done with the application, remove your finger from the handle of the caulking gun and disengage the metal rod. If you do not follow this step it could lead to sealant leakage. Next smooth en out the sealant with your finger and wipe the excess silicone with a paint thinner or rag. It is very easy to take care of your own water proofing needs when you have the support of clear silicone sealant by your side. So the next time the rains bother you, do not call in the water proofing experts, get it done yourself.
Red Silicone sealants are just as good for water proofing. If your supplier runs out of your regular sealant you could request for a red silicone sealant and avail of the same benefits. The price of red silicone sealants is more or less the same and you can avail of the same long terms advantages, the clear variety offers.
