Expired food?
what happens to all the food that have reach its shelve life in supermarts? dairy products, food, fruits and etc. how are they handled. disposed in the bin? recycle as fertilizer? send to a charitable organization before expiration date? or just thrown into the bin?
are expired food recycleble as fertilizer? would it assist in preventing global warming? does it help provide as another source of energy for machinery?
In my town, all tinned and packaged goods (also bent tins, ripped or squashed packets) are marked down to maybe a quarter of their normal price, making them good bargains, and we all like a good bargain, don't we?
Fruit is also bagged and marked down, and almost always sold very quickly. In the recent banana shortage, when they were selling for $13.99/ $14.99 a kilo, if you just happened to be there at the right time, you could pick up a bag of loose bananas, with blemished skins, but perfect inside, for as little as $3 for a 2kilo bag. All fruit and veg is marked down and sold in this way. The store is allowed 'shrinkage' on all perishables.
Meat is marked down about four days before it's use by date. Each day it is marked down again, and two days before expiry it will be half price or less. I continually stack my freezer with meat bought at these bargain prices.
Milk , yoghurt and ice cream etc is also discounted, so big savings are made. You just have to shop with a keen eye, and being there, in the right place at the right time, certainly helps.
To all those folk who say "Ooh, I wouldn't risk buying this or that!" - remember that use by dates are a recent thing, and we survived for years just trusting our noses and taste buds. I just hate to see waste of any kind, and do my utmost to use and recycle whatever I can.
